Determining Your Hat Size

Determining Your Hat Size*

Hat size is based on the circumference of your head. To find your proper hat size, follow these steps:

1. Using a tape measure, measure around your head about half an inch above your eyebrows where the hat will rest. Ensure the tape measure is straight and not twisted.

2. If you are uncertain about your size or fall between sizes, it’s best to choose the larger size.

3. **Refer to the Chart**:

Use the chart below to determine your hat size based on your measurement.

Shape of Your Head – Long Oval

Some heads are more elongated and are described in hat parlance as “long oval.” Fear The Brim LLC can shape any hat to accommodate a long oval head. If a long oval wearer buys a regular oval hat, it will not sit comfortably and the brim will pull and wrinkle. When ordering, please inform me if you need your hat to be made into a long oval. Please note that we do not accept returns on any hats that have been modified, including those shaped to a long oval.

Hat Care Tips

Best Care for your Hat:

1. Always handle your hat by the brim, avoiding the crown as much as possible, especially for straw hats. Grabbing the front pinch of the crown can cause significant damage, leading to cracks in straw hats and holes in felt hats.

 2. Never rest your hat on its brim while the brim is turned down. Instead, turn it upside down and rest it on the crown. If the brim is snapped up, you can carefully rest the hat on the brim.

 3. Regularly dust your hat with a soft-bristled hat brush to keep it clean. This brush effectively removes dirt, dust, and lint from the hat’s surface. Brushes can be found on our “shop” page.

 4. Heat can shrink the interior sweatband. Keep your hat away from stoves, radiators, lamps, and car windows while storing.

 5. Store your hat in a cool, dry place to help it retain its shape and stay clean. When not in use, especially out-of-season, store your hat in a hat box.

If Your Brim Gets Wet:

If your felt hat gets wet, first return it to its original shape. Then, turn down the interior leather sweatband and rest the hat on the sweatband to dry. Do not rest the hat on its brim while wet if the brim is turned down. If the brim is snapped back up, you may carefully rest the hat on the brim to dry. Avoid exposing a wet hat to heat, as this will shrink the sweatband and cause irregular patterns in the felt. –

**Straw Hats**: Try to prevent your straw hat from getting wet. Water will cause the straw to swell, discolor, and lose its shape.
